How to Get Rid of Belly Fat

How many of us struggle with weight issues? Do we really know what makes us fat? Contrary to popular belief, eating fat does not make us fat. What does make us fat is a hyper-insulin response. What does that mean? Well, let’s start at the beginning.

First of all, low fat diets do not work for everyone. And according to Dr. Steve Nugent, author of the Genetic Key Diet, in some cases low fat diets actually cause fat gain as well as ill health. Why? Low fat diets encourage consumption of high glycemic foods. High Glycemic foods raise your blood sugar. When your blood sugar is raised it’s called a hyper-insulin response. A hyper-insulin response is taxing on the pancreas causing it to overwork. In addition, these types of foods can cause the liver to produce blood fats (a.k.a. triglycerides) and eventually raise your cholesterol.

Okay, enough of the technical terms. What does that mean to your diet? That means that you should be eating foods that do NOT cause an increase in your blood sugar level. Those types of foods are known as low glycemic foods. Not sure what’s low glycemic or high glycemic? Keep the glycemic food chart to help guide you through your meals. After reviewing the chart you will get to easily recognize what foods are better for you to eat and which foods aren’t.

Does this really work? As I am just starting to introduce this to my clients, they have noticed a difference. The difference with this type of program is that sometimes the results show up in the inches lost and not the exact weight. With this type of eating you actually help your body build lean tissue while getting rid of the fat. So that means measure your inches and throw away the scale. In my first three months on a low glycemic program, I reduced 20 inches.

One more thing for you to do is to eat every two to three hours. Oh goodness, how much fun is that. Just make sure that you eat low glycemic foods. Many of us have what is called a “Thrifty Gene.” This is a genetic predisposition your body has to hold onto its fat if it thinks it is going to be starving. If you do not eat every two –three hours, your body will think it is starving and prevent itself from releasing any extra fat. If you eat every few hours, then your body knows it is not going to starve and will allow itself to start releasing the excess fat it has. Although the thrifty gene is not fun to have when you are facing weight issues, for the cave people, it came in pretty handy in preventing starvation when there wasn’t much food to be found.
