Atkins Diet Questions: Loose Skin

** Graphic Display of loose skin around my stomach near the end — Viewers may want to ensure a bag is available ** Today’s episode I deal with the one of the most common questions people ask me after hearing of my 200 pound weight loss. That is, “do you have much problems with loose skin?” In the end, I have to admit that I do have a bit of loose skin (I affectionately & sometime not so affectionately my “sharpei”) around my torso and legs, but it could be much worse. I could have the sheets of skin some dieters (more often low Calorie big losers) have or even worse be my original weight still living in fear of loose skin. There are times that I actually like my stretchmarks as they server as reminders of what might be if I think I can lax up. It also serves as a talking point like my pathetic driver’s license does for people looking for hope, but most days I am just thankful for shirts. There are other things that are claimed to help, but I have not tried. Cocoa Butter and Mederma are both used by pregnant women to ease the appearance of stretchmarks. Additionally, I believe the content of this Diet helps in maintaining the elasticity due to protein and fat being featured. The body does not cannibalize its own resources like on other diets, and many report their skin looks as good and clear as it ever had. Good skin health implies good skin elasticity to respond to the weight loss as well. One final theory about loose skin: www.bodyfatguide.com To summarize the above

Congrats on the weight loss! Thanks for being so honest!

whoah, I do some Aerobics, yoga and some weights training to make myself lean as well. can’t see myself doing a marathon though hehe but I wish i could :) :)

  3. BenW1991NE says:

    creepy. but very honest.

  4. bowulf says:

I exercised starting one month into the diet and have eventually worked up to running marathons, biking 30-40 miles at a time, and doing weight lifting.

  5. ShesThe1yup says:

Did you exercise during all this weight loss or just lose weight from your Atkins diet alone?

The more I read about dieting, the more I’m convinced that muscle loss can be prevented. The reason why you probably lost a lot of msucle Brushfour was because you didn’t eat enough protein.
One study I read had two groups of people who were placed on 500 calorie diets. One group would have their calories from only protein(125 grams) and the other group would have a mix of carbs and protein. At the end of the study, they discrovered that the higher protein group lost NO muscle.

I think you definitely could lose 2-3 pounds average a week all the way to roughly 10-15 pounds from goal. At that point, your weight loss should slow down in the pre-maintenance period.

Honestly at 19 years old, you should not have that much loose skin to worry about if you eat enough healthy fats and protein (not starve your body) and exercise the body (and thereby the skin) as well. The people who have loads of loose skin typically were in severe Calorie deficits all the way down.

Like I said in this video, part of me just says there is better uses for my money ($6-10000) as insurance wouldn’t cover it. That is a sizeable amount for something that few people see, and would largely just be for cosmetic purposes. Being happily married eliminates some of that some self-consciousness too.

I am also somewhat nervous about what it would do for my exercise and running life during recovery. I can take the pain, but if it means no running or playing basketball, what’s the point?

My goal weight is 120 lbs

Have you thought about getting plastic surgery? If so why, and if not, why not? I’m 5’1, 243 lbs, 19 years old, and planning to lose about 2 lbs a week until I reach my goal weight, perhaps slowing the loss down by half a pound or so as I get closer to my goal. In your opinion, is that realistic? Will I have loose skin afterwards? My fat is prety evently distributed over my entire body, perhaps a little bit more around the stomach than anywhere else.

  11. bowulf says:

Yeah, yeah – show me someone who lost 211 pounds without any loose skin.

Perhaps your natural diet is causing these bouts of angst and over-emotionality.

  12. brushfour says:

If you restart your healthy natural diet, along with a resistance program, over time you will see that loose skin tighten up like a drum. You’ll be lean, hard and fit. Your skin and hair and overall appearance will be better as you’ll be taking in foods higher in nutrition. You should have NEVER listened to this Bowulf goofball. He doesn’t know anything…and now at 17 years old you get to suffer the results. At least it’s all reversible so rest easy there and just be smarter from now on.

  13. brushfour says:

On a normal diet, you would NOT have encounterd loose skin. You did so because you lost weight..but particularly muscle weight at an alarming rate. In 3 months, you should have only looked to lose about 13-15 lbs of FAT at most. This is the problem with Low Carb diets. PLEASE switch your eating pattern back to a NATURAL balanced diet of foods from all Major food groups. Forget Low Carb…it’s ridiculous and now you’re seeing why. Pick up a weight-training program to build back the lost muscle.

  14. bowulf says:

You are extremely young still, and I know the worry. You however have time on your side. Work on dropping the remaining body fat to 8-11% depending on your motivation and exercise, and the skin will shrink back to your appropriate size.

Hi, I am 17 year old and this summer lost 55 pounds in 3 months, with my own diet (it’s stupid, but it’s too late to talk about), and I have not that much loose skin around my belly, actually i don’t know if it’s loose skin, coz it doesn’t hangs (in profile, the lower ab is kinda “fatter” comparing with upper ab), but when I run or jump, it goes up and down. How thick can be that loose skin? I am not that worried, coz I am planning to run and remove that fat, but what if the rest is loose skin?

  16. 11visionary11 says:

Thanks:) She lost about 80 lbs a few yrs ago but has gained it back…plus a bit:(
I think this will help motivate her. She needs to loose about 180lbs, so for you to have lost 211 is great.

  17. bowulf says:

I am glad I was able to put her mind at ease. Even losing after 211 pounds, I think it could have been much worse than trying to do it extremely low Calorie. Best of luck to your mom!

  18. 11visionary11 says:

my mother is extreemly over weight, and is hopefully loosing it with atkins…she is worried about this and thank you for the video.

  19. bowulf says:

Thank you. Most days I am not bothered at all by it. Like I said in the video, it’s a good reminder of what used to be, and it definitely is not “bad” enough to drive me away from the beach or to cover up with a T-shirt.

  20. CanadaCraig says:

I was all prepared for a ‘horror show’. But what I ended up seeing was just some loss skin. Nothing horrifically awful about that. Congratulations on the successful weight loss.

  21. bowulf says:

I will say this by the time I reached goal, my heart rate was in the mid 60s bpm. Now after a few years of running, it varies mid day from 48-54 according to the ladies at blood donation center. My hypertension has departed as well to (~100/60) most days.

    There is definitely hope.

  22. brandonmgd says:

Im big, and mine does. But I would find my self feeling it, and then having anxiety about it which only increased my bpm’s.

  23. bowulf says:

I never had heart arrhythmia problems, but my heart had certainly an elevated rate consistently (80+ bpm) and hypertension (135/92). Neither were in the danger categories, but I was certainly out of breath simply by going up a flight of stairs to a meeting.

  24. boxerfan2 says:

when you were 400 pounds did your heart race for no reason?

  25. bowulf says:

Specifically loose skin, no. Core and abdominal muscle workouts will help build the muscle under the skin, so when the fat is lost, you might have definition behind it. It will not cause the skin to tighten though.
