How To Win With Cancer

Just as in the general population, there has been a
growing epidemic of cancer among celebrities and
public figures, such as in the recent cases of
Patrick Swayze, Cristina Applegate, Sheryl Crow,
Melissa Etheridge, Farrah Fawcett, Ted Kennedy,
Kylie Minogue, Rudy Giuliani, Lance Armstrong,
just to name a few.

Even more celebrities have lost loved ones to cancer,
such as:

Angelina Jolie, Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell (who all lost
their mothers to cancer); Paul McCartney (who lost his first
wife, Linda, to breast cancer); CBS news anchor Katie Couric
(who lost her husband to colon cancer); American Idol David
Cook (who lost his maternal grandfather to lung cancer);
Brian Williams of NBC Nightly News (who lost his mother to
lymphoma and his sister to breast cancer); S. Epatha
Merkerson of “Law and Order” (who lost 2 of her very best
friends to lung cancer) … and the list goes on.

Cancer has become a much bigger threat to human lives –
and has caused more deaths — than all the wars of the world
combined.  In the U.S. alone, every 60 seconds, someone dies
from cancer — and that’s like losing as many people as we
did on 9/11 every 2 days.

Here’s another grim statistic:  Every 3 minutes, someone
new is diagnosed with cancer.  Is it any wonder, then,
that celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, America Ferrera,
Meryl Streep, Lance Armstrong, Scarlett Johansson, Forest
Whitaker, Hilary Swank, Charlize Theron and dozens of
other big-name celebrities banded together to put an end
to cancer during a one-hour television special titled
“Stand Up 2 Cancer?”  The telethon aired on all 3
networks (ABC, CBS and NBC) to raise funds for cancer
research.

The problem with raising funds for cancer research is this:

The funds eventually go towards cancer research that does
NOT cure cancer.  In the 95 years that health organizations like
the American Cancer Society have been dedicated to eliminating
cancer as a major health problem, there has been VERY LITTLE
PROGRESS made in the curing of the deadly disease.  Instead,
the incidence of cancer has grown exponentially over the last
hundred years.

A single cancer fundraising campaign, such as the Avon Walk for
Breast Cancer, for instance, raises approximately $150 million in
funds for cancer research.  Tens of billions of dollars have been
raised by all the fundraising campaigns combined – and yet,
according to the American Cancer Society, there’s still a 41%
probability that an individual, male or female, will develop cancer
in his or her lifetime (or die from it)!

Why have all the billions of dollars raised for cancer research
been FUTILE in curing cancer?

Many people, including the Chairman of the Cancer Prevention
Coalition, Dr. Samuel Epstein, state that the priorities of
health organizations that claim to be dedicated to finding a
cancer cure are “economically motivated, and reflect
conflicts of interests with the pharmaceutical industry,
the pesticide industry, and the mammography industry.”

Another reason why attempts at curing cancer have been
futile thus far is because the funds raised have been allocated
to raising public awareness of the merits of the 3 conventional
cancer therapies – that is, chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

And yet, Oncologist Dr. Tullio Simoncini states that according to
his polls and questionnaires, “75 percent of doctors say they’d
refuse chemotherapy if they were struck with cancer due to its
ineffectiveness and its devastating side effects.”  In fact, the
medical journal, “Clinical Oncology,” published the results of a
study in December 2004, wherein it was shown that
chemotherapy has a success rate of just over 2 percent for
all cancers!  [That's a FAILURE rate of 98%!]

Therefore, funneling research funds towards the advancement
of ineffective therapies that don’t eliminate the root CAUSE
of cancer will always be a losing proposition.

The fact is, the business of “curing” cancer – or any disease,
for that matter — has become an overcomplicated system
that is usually invasive and expensive.  More often than not,
it also does more harm than good – and the “good” that it does
is limited to relieving only the SYMPTOMS of the disease, and
not its CAUSE.

But now, there is a simple and natural therapy that is
scientifically proven to eradicate cancer – without the need
for surgery, drugs or radiation.  In fact, this therapy has been
prescribed and administered by more than 15,000
European doctors, naturopaths and health
practitioners to heal not just cancer but most other

too, might die just as my father did.

for cancer — to save the lives of my beloved mother and
sister.  My search led me to find this scientifically proven

The Low Carb Stevia Tortilla Treat

Here is a quick recipe for a light, low carb treat to try. It’s like toast with cinnamon and sugar. First the recipe and how to make it, then a couple of additions and changes to expand on the idea to make more use of the ingredients in meals and snacks.


This cool treat works great for low carb and low glycemic eaters.


The Necessary Ingredients:


1 Mission Brand Carb Balance Fajita size Tortilla


These are low carb tortillas. They come in 3 sizes, fajita, soft taco, and burrito. And two varieties, regular white or whole wheat, both have high levels of fiber.


The white fajita size shows 5g net carbs for one tortilla, which is 12g carbs total, but 7g dietary fiber. The whole wheat fajita has 4 net.


Ground cinnamon, any good one will do.


Powdered Stevia

Try Optimum Nutrition Stevia Powder or another good brand. For those not familiar with stevia, it is a plant extract that tastes sweet but has no calories.


Stevia originates in South America, but has spread all over the world. In Japan, for instance, diet beverages use it as a sweetener. It is not a concocted or chemical created sugar substitute, but a plant extract.


It has a slight aftertaste, but comes directly from nature. You could, of course, substitute nutrisweet (aspartame), or Splenda (sucralose) as a sugar substitute. Or even xylitol or sorbitol, which are low glycemic, but not low carbohydrate.


To make the treat:

Fry or butter the tortilla. When frying, stop while the tortilla is still flexible, but has some golden spots on it.


To make this extremely low fat, use that butter spray or just warm the tortilla. As another option, cook the tortilla in a hot frying pan without oil, or even toast it in a toaster for about half the time needed for a slice of bread. But without the oil from frying or the butter or spray, the cinnamon and stevia probably won’t stick.


Sprinkle on some cinnamon, about a quarter of a teaspoon over the tortilla, to taste.


Sprinkle on some stevia, just a little. It is something like 500 times as sweet as sugar, so use it sparingly. About half a teaspoon or less should be plenty.


This makes a nice low carb snack. The tortilla even has 3 grams of protein.


Other Ideas

Use these tortillas for other things as well. Try making tacos and quesadillas.


For quesadillas, just put about one quarter cup of shredded cheese on the tortilla after frying or cooking it, then heat in the microwave for about 30 seconds. This is similar to a cheese sandwich. Eat open or folded. Try putting in a slice of turkey, ham or roast beef, and create a great hot sandwich.


For tacos, just use regular taco fillings, but using the low carb tortilla as a shell and cut down or eliminate the beans – hardly any difference. And they make great low carb chips. Cut them into chip shape and just fry them till crispy. Most salsas have few carbohydrates. These tortillas make Mexican food work great for low carb and low glycemic eaters.


Also, stevia fits into tons of things, for example, homemade lemonade, like this: A glass of water, add about 5-10 drops of stevia liquid, and a couple of tablespoons of lemon juice, to taste. A very refreshing lemonade.

Low Carb Desserts

Luscious desserts and low-carb diets typically do not mix.  Sugar is, of course, a carbohydrate.  How can you have something “sweet” without using sugar?

Those of us who cook know that using artificial sweeteners changes the recipe, drastically.  Things like saccharin have less “bulk” than straight sugar.  So, trying to bake a sugar-free cake can be very difficult.

But, even sugar free cakes are not  low carb desserts.  Flour is also a carbohydrate.  Eggs, milk and cheese are allowed on your low-carb diet.  But, sugar and flour are not.  So, what should you do? 

How about cheesecake?

Typically, New York style cheesecake is made with heavy cream, cream cheese, eggs and additional egg yolks to add richness and a smooth consistency.  Lemons, strawberries or chocolate shavings may be added for flavor.  None of those ingredients are carbs, but of course, most recipes call for sugar and lots of it. 

Once you add the carbs from the graham cracker crust, you have about 25 grams of carbohydrates in a 3.5 ounce serving.  That’s a pretty small slice.  But, cheesecakes can be low carb desserts, if they are properly prepared, without the sugar and “sans” crust. 

It’s difficult (next to impossible, really) to make this kind of cheesecake at home, because, as I mentioned, sugar substitutes change the recipe.  If you do get it to set, you also get an unpleasant aftertaste.  It’s hardly worth the effort. 

But, you can still serve delicious low carb desserts at home, with very little effort on your part.  You can simply order it on-line.

Our own line options for serving a gourmet meal are simply amazing, to me anyway.  We can stick to our diets, eat healthy, cater a dinner party or have a private affair for two, right in the luxury of our own homes.

When you consider the time it takes to cook a meal, the shopping, the cost of ingredients and the likelihood that the recipe will “flop”, I think catered meals are a cost-effective option.  I don’t know about you, but my time is money.

My health is very important to me, but temptations are not always easy to resist.  So, I try to be sure that I always have “healthy temptations”.

If you work full time and commute to your office, by the time you get in your daily work-out and get ready for dinner, you might be tempted to settle for fast-food or whatever’s in the fridge.  That’s what happens to a lot of people, so they end up with an unsuccessful and unhealthy diet.
