The Low Carb Stevia Tortilla Treat

Here is a quick recipe for a light, low carb treat to try. It’s like toast with cinnamon and sugar. First the recipe and how to make it, then a couple of additions and changes to expand on the idea to make more use of the ingredients in meals and snacks.

This cool treat works great for low carb and low glycemic eaters.

The Necessary Ingredients:

1 Mission Brand Carb Balance Fajita size Tortilla

These are low carb tortillas. They come in 3 sizes, fajita, soft taco, and burrito. And two varieties, regular white or whole wheat, both have high levels of fiber.

The white fajita size shows 5g net carbs for one tortilla, which is 12g carbs total, but 7g dietary fiber. The whole wheat fajita has 4 net.

Ground cinnamon, any good one will do.

Powdered Stevia

Try Optimum Nutrition Stevia Powder or another good brand. For those not familiar with stevia, it is a plant extract that tastes sweet but has no calories.

Stevia originates in South America, but has spread all over the world. In Japan, for instance, diet beverages use it as a sweetener. It is not a concocted or chemical created sugar substitute, but a plant extract.

It has a slight aftertaste, but comes directly from nature. You could, of course, substitute nutrisweet (aspartame), or Splenda (sucralose) as a sugar substitute. Or even xylitol or sorbitol, which are low glycemic, but not low carbohydrate.

To make the treat:

Fry or butter the tortilla. When frying, stop while the tortilla is still flexible, but has some golden spots on it.

To make this extremely low fat, use that butter spray or just warm the tortilla. As another option, cook the tortilla in a hot frying pan without oil, or even toast it in a toaster for about half the time needed for a slice of bread. But without the oil from frying or the butter or spray, the cinnamon and stevia probably won’t stick.

Sprinkle on some cinnamon, about a quarter of a teaspoon over the tortilla, to taste.

Sprinkle on some stevia, just a little. It is something like 500 times as sweet as sugar, so use it sparingly. About half a teaspoon or less should be plenty.

This makes a nice low carb snack. The tortilla even has 3 grams of protein.

Other Ideas

Use these tortillas for other things as well. Try making tacos and quesadillas.

For quesadillas, just put about one quarter cup of shredded cheese on the tortilla after frying or cooking it, then heat in the microwave for about 30 seconds. This is similar to a cheese sandwich. Eat open or folded. Try putting in a slice of turkey, ham or roast beef, and create a great hot sandwich.

For tacos, just use regular taco fillings, but using the low carb tortilla as a shell and cut down or eliminate the beans – hardly any difference. And they make great low carb chips. Cut them into chip shape and just fry them till crispy. Most salsas have few carbohydrates. These tortillas make Mexican food work great for low carb and low glycemic eaters.

Also, stevia fits into tons of things, for example, homemade lemonade, like this: A glass of water, add about 5-10 drops of stevia liquid, and a couple of tablespoons of lemon juice, to taste. A very refreshing lemonade.

Loose Weight with TEA?

Although Britain is a nation of tea drinkers, we still have a lot to learn about tea. Drinking the right tea at the right time of day has been known to provide substantial health benefits.

You might not think of tea when it comes to trying to loose weight, but research has shown that certain types of teas do:

Pu-erh Tea (Yamamotoyama: Pu-erh, Chrysanthemum; Birt & Tang: Pu’er & Camomile, Figuro)

The brewed tea is dark red, and has a bold, earthy taste. Pu-erh is known to help digest fatty foods, increase metabolism and help to reduce your cholesterol levels. It is perfect to take this tea throughout the day especially after meals.

Oolong Tea (Yamamotoyama: China Oolong Chocolate Mint Oolong, White Peach Oolong, Coconut Mango Oolong, Chrysanthemum; Birt & Tang: Oolong & Raspberry, Osmanthus, Gojiberry, Blueberry, Cardioplus)

Oolongs range from bright green and slightly fermented to dark-leafed and hearty. The greener varieties are less fermented. Oolong tea therefore comes in a wide range of tastes and aromas from teas very close in taste to green tea to those very close to black tea.

Oolong tea burns over 157% more fat than Green Tea – and therefore becoming the most popular teas designed to accelerate weight loss. Drinking two cups of Oolong tea every day not only helps shed stubborn pounds by boosting your metabolism, but also blocks the fattening effects of carbohydrates.

Slimming Tea (Yogitea: Slim & Fit)

When we are fit, our lives flow in an easy, flexible rhythm. This herbal tea has been formulated with herbs thought to support a well functioning metabolism. Pu-erh tea is used worldwide for its beneficial properties. Mate, prized in South America for its valuable nutrients and antioxidants, is a natural energiser. This formula is balanced with rosemary, rooibos and nettle, all of which are known to be rich in nutrients. Enjoy Women’s Slim & Fit Tea throughout the day while following your fasting or fitness program.

Detox Tea (Yogitea: Detox, Birt & Tang: Detox)

This tea contains a combination of herbs and spices, which have been used for centuries in India to support the internal cleansing process and thereby eliminating excess fluids. Purify yourself each day by making Detox a regular part of your diet. Detox is also a great addition to a diet or a fast.

Stomach Ease Tea (Yogitea: Stomach Ease)

This tea is based on a recipe of herbs and spices believed to support the digestive process in breaking down fats and reduce feeling bloated after a meal. It contains fennel, liquorice and peppermint leaf known for their beneficial effect on digestion. Warming herbs such as cardamom, coriander, ginger and black pepper balances this delicious blend. Enjoy a cup during or after a meal.

All Green & White Teas (Tazo: Zen, Numi: Monkey King, Dragonfly: Swirling Mist White Tea, Stashtea: Ginger Peach, Pomegranate Raspberry, Decaf Raspberry White – and many more)

All green and white teas are known for their ‘thermogenic’ properties, whereby the body temperature raises to burn more calories. These teas have traditionally been used in Chinese medicine to refresh, detoxify and bring the immune system into balance.

If the workout you have decided on gets to easy for you then you might want to think about upping your endurance a bit to make it more of a challenge.

Why Apple-Shaped Body Develops in Menopause – And How to Slim It Down

If you’re a woman of forty-plus, you’ll know how easily that apple-shaped body emerges during the years leading up to menopause. Find out why the fat gathers around your middle, and how to combat menopausal midriff weight gain.

Why does fat accumulate around your middle?

It’s all to do with hormones.

Perimenopause can last for several years, starting as early as your mid-thirties and ending with your last menstrual period at the average age of 51. During the transition, your ovaries are gradually winding down and producing less and less oestrogen.

This diminished supply of oestrogen is bad news for your body, and causes menopausal signs like hot flashes, insomnia and roller-coaster emotions. This is where fat cells come to the rescue. Your 30 billion fat cells, much as you may disparage them, are cunning little entities. Fat cells take on a new job in midlife, because they start producing oestrogen in a bid to compensate for what’s being lost from your ovaries and cushion you from the worst effects of lowered hormones. The trouble is, they do it by multiplying in number, and by getting bigger. Result – a gradual increase in weight, which creeps on inexorably, even if your eating and exercise habits are the same as ever.

And there’s more. The stress hormone cortisol also plays an important role in shape-shifting your body. Cortisol is pumped out when you’re under stress. It’s one of the ‘fight or flight’ hormones, designed to give you a massive surge of energy when you need to escape from danger, or confront an enemy.

But when the danger in question is the fact that you’ll be late for work if the bus doesn’t come now, or the enemy is your partner who left a pile of dirty dishes on the counter, your stress levels still rise and your adrenals release cortisol. Because you don’t use up physical energy in your response to stress, all that fuel swilling around in your bloodstream in the form of fat and glucose has nowhere to go. It’s no surprise to learn that it ends up being stored as fat, and it piles on around your belly because that’s the spot closest to your liver, where it can be quickly transformed into energy next time you need it.

The cortisol/weight gain link is a real problem for mid-life women who can face a whole welter of stresses, from their kids and partners, their own ageing parents, to their jobs, health, finances and numerous other worries.

Why is an apple-shaped body unhealthy?

Midriff fat is dangerous stuff. It seeps hormones and other substances into your bloodstream which can elevate blood pressure as well as affecting insulin and cholesterol levels.

Having a fat belly also raises your risk of developing heart disease and diabetes, and is also implicated in the appearance of some cancers.

If you’ve noticed your waistline gradually disappearing, and your tummy becoming more rounded, it’s time to take action.

How to shift the apple-shape from around your middle

These tips can help you beat the battle of the bulge and get your waistline in trim again.

Shun calorie-controlled or faddy diets. When you diet, your body feels deprived and responds by hanging on to every last ounce of fat and slowing your metabolism, making it extremely hard to shed weight. When you go back to eating normally, your body stores fat to protect you from future deprivation. That’s why so many women get stuck in an endless cycle of diet – lose – end diet – regain the lost weight.

Eat several small meals each day, rather than 2-3 big meals. This strategy evens out your blood sugar levels, which in turn means you crave less for sugary, fatty carbs. A simple, healthy snack in the middle of the morning and the afternoon can make all the difference. Don’t ever be tempted to skip a meal. You’ll only find yourself eating more at the next one.

Cut down drastically on foods containing sugar and refined carbohydrates. Go for wholegrain carbs and pulses, eat plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit, include a good source of lean protein every time you eat.

Add different types of exercise to your lifestyle.  Make physical exertion a priority, and don’t stop at aerobics like walking or cycling. It’s really important to build strength through muscle at this stage of life, so make sure you regularly include strength-building exercises like free weights, yoga or Pilates.

Tackle stress.  Learning to put yourself and your health top of the pile is difficult, but it’s vital to prioritise your needs for rest and relaxation, and for enjoyable pastimes that help you chill out. Try de-stressing techniques as well, there are many to choose from, so find those that work best for you and add them into your life on a daily basis.

Follow these tips and you’ll be able to tame that apple-shaped body and have a happier, healthier menopause into the bargain.
